Zirconia Crowns in Istanbul: Material, Gum Health and Planning

Zirconia crowns Istanbul: when a crown is indicated, how zirconia compares and how to plan your visits at our Bahcelievler clinic. Book an assessment.

Last updated:

Zirconia crowns Istanbul patients enquire about are tooth-coloured caps milled from zirconium dioxide, a strong ceramic that covers and protects a damaged tooth or an implant. At Yayla Dental Akademi in Bahçelievler, we decide on crowns only after assessing the tooth, the gums and your bite.

At a glance

  • Purpose: to restore teeth weakened by large fillings, fractures or root canal treatment, or to cover implants.
  • Visits: usually at least two appointments several days apart, for preparation and fitting.
  • Anaesthesia: local anaesthesia is generally used for tooth preparation.
  • Tooth reduction: some enamel must be removed, so the decision is irreversible.
  • Long-term success: depends heavily on gum health, crown fit and daily cleaning.

Do you actually need a crown?

A crown is not a cosmetic accessory; it is a restoration that requires reshaping a natural tooth. Consequently, the first question is whether a more conservative option would work. In many cases, a filling, an onlay or professional teeth whitening can achieve the goal with less tooth removal.

Situations where a crown is commonly considered

  • A tooth with a large, failing filling or a crack.
  • A back tooth after root canal treatment, which can be prone to fracture.
  • A replacement crown on top of a dental implant.
  • Abutment teeth for a bridge replacing a missing tooth.

Situations where we usually advise against crowns

  • Healthy teeth that only need a colour change; whitening or more conservative options should be considered first.
  • Active gum disease, which must be controlled before any crown work.
  • Severe untreated grinding (bruxism) without a protective night guard plan.
  • Teeth with a poor long-term prognosis, where an implant or other solution may be more appropriate.

How zirconia compares with other crown materials

The table summarises general characteristics; the right choice depends on the tooth's position, your bite and aesthetic expectations.

MaterialMain strengthsPoints to consider
Monolithic zirconiaHigh strength, no metal, suitable for back teethLess translucent than layered ceramics
Layered zirconiaStrong core with a more natural-looking surfaceThe outer porcelain layer can chip
Lithium disilicate (glass ceramic)Very good translucency for front teethLower strength than zirconia
Porcelain fused to metalLong clinical historyA metal margin may show as a grey line if gums recede

Plaque accumulation differs between crown materials, and smooth, well-polished ceramic surfaces tend to retain less plaque than rougher ones [10].

Gum health: the evidence behind a well-fitting crown

As a periodontology clinic, we focus on the gum line, where many crowns succeed or fail. The gum attaches to the tooth through a narrow zone of soft tissue, sometimes called the biologic width, whose dimensions were described by Gargiulo and colleagues [6]. If a crown edge invades this zone, chronic inflammation and recession may follow [11].

Fit matters too. A clinical study found that crowns with larger marginal discrepancies were associated with more gingival inflammation [7]. Similarly, a prospective two-year study reported that placing the preparation line at or above the gum margin, where aesthetics allow, was more favourable for periodontal health than placing it deep below the gum [9].

In the front of the mouth, the small triangle of gum between teeth, the papilla, also affects appearance. Tarnow and co-workers showed that the papilla was more likely to fill the space when the distance from the contact point to the bone crest was short [8].

Zirconia on implants

Zirconia is also used for implant abutments, the connector between implant and crown. Reviews suggest zirconia abutments perform comparably to titanium in terms of soft tissue health [1][2], and a multicentre study found that abutment material can influence the colour of the surrounding gum, which is relevant when gums are thin [3]. Mechanical studies, however, indicate that design and connection type affect strength [4][5], so material choice is made case by case.

The crown process, step by step

  1. Assessment: examination, X-rays, gum check and bite analysis.
  2. Preliminary care: treating decay, root canal problems or gum inflammation first.
  3. Preparation: shaping the tooth under local anaesthesia and taking a digital scan or impression.
  4. Temporary crown: protects the tooth while the laboratory works.
  5. Try-in and cementation: checking fit, contacts, bite and shade before final fixing.
  6. Review: a check of gums and bite after the crown has settled.

Planning zirconia crowns as a visitor to Istanbul

For a small number of crowns on healthy, vital teeth, treatment often fits into one stay with a gap of several working days between preparation and fitting. More extensive cases, or those needing root canal or gum treatment first, may require a longer stay or two trips. Your exact plan is set after examination and X-rays.

Before you travel

  • Send recent X-rays and clear photos of your teeth, if available.
  • Bring your medication list and note any allergies.

Location and arrival

The clinic is in Bahçelievler on the European side of Istanbul, near Bakırköy and Şirinevler. From Istanbul Airport (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), taxis, shuttle buses and public transport are available; allow extra time for traffic.

Follow-up at home

We can provide a written summary and copies of your X-rays so that your home dentist can monitor the crowns. Routine check-ups and professional dental cleaning help detect early problems at the crown margins.

Risks and aftercare

Temporary sensitivity after preparation is common. Other possible issues include chipping of layered porcelain, loosening of the cement, nerve irritation that may later require root canal treatment, and gum recession exposing the crown edge.

To protect your crowns, brush twice daily, clean between teeth with floss or interdental brushes, wear a night guard if you grind, and avoid biting hard objects. If your gums bleed around a crown, our gum disease treatment service can assess the cause.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do zirconia crowns take in Istanbul?

For simple cases, preparation and fitting are usually several working days apart. Complex cases may take longer or need two trips, and your dentist confirms the timeline after examination.

Are zirconia crowns better than porcelain fused to metal?

Zirconia contains no metal and avoids a grey margin, whereas metal-ceramic crowns have a long clinical history. The choice depends on the tooth position, bite and aesthetics.

Do healthy teeth need to be filed down for crowns?

Yes, a crown requires removing some tooth structure, which cannot be reversed. For this reason, we do not recommend crowns on healthy teeth purely for colour change.

Can zirconia crowns cause gum problems?

Gum problems are more often related to crown fit, margin position and plaque control than to zirconia itself. Well-fitting margins and good hygiene help keep gums healthy.

Can I whiten my teeth after getting crowns?

Whitening does not change the colour of crowns. If you want whiter teeth, it is usually done before crowns so that their shade matches.

How long do zirconia crowns last?

Longevity varies with oral hygiene, bite forces, grinding and regular check-ups.
