Teeth whitening Istanbul visitors and residents ask about is a dentist-supervised treatment that lightens the natural colour of teeth using hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide gels. Unlike polishing, it acts inside the enamel and dentine. At Yayla Dental Akademi in Bahçelievler, we first identify the cause of discoloration, because that determines whether whitening will help.
At a glance
- Options: in-office whitening, dentist-supervised home trays, or a combination; internal bleaching for a single darkened root-filled tooth.
- Time: an in-office session generally takes around an hour or more; home whitening is spread over a period of days to weeks.
- Anaesthesia: not required.
- Common side effect: temporary sensitivity.
- Limitation: fillings, crowns and veneers do not change colour.
Start with the cause: why teeth change colour
Discoloration is broadly divided into extrinsic stains on the tooth surface and intrinsic changes within the tooth structure [2]. Understanding which type you have is the most useful first step.
Extrinsic (surface) stains
Coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco leave pigments on the enamel surface and in plaque and tartar. These stains often respond well to professional dental cleaning and polishing alone. Many patients find that their teeth look noticeably brighter after scaling, before any bleaching gel is used.
Intrinsic stains
Age-related yellowing, certain medicines taken during tooth development, excessive fluoride and trauma to a tooth can alter colour from within [2]. Age-related yellowing usually responds well to bleaching, whereas some developmental stains respond only partly or slowly.
A single dark tooth
A tooth that has darkened after an injury or root canal treatment is a different situation. It may be treated with internal bleaching, often called the "walking bleach" technique, which places the whitening agent inside the tooth [3]. This is closely related to endodontic care and is planned after checking the root filling.
Comparing whitening options
| Option | How it works | Suits | Considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-office whitening | Higher-concentration gel applied by the dentist, with the gums protected | Patients with limited time, such as visitors | Sensitivity can be more noticeable afterwards |
| At-home trays | Lower-concentration gel in custom-made trays | Gradual whitening; expats living in Istanbul | Requires daily commitment |
| Combined | Office session followed by home trays | Stubborn stains or maintaining results | Needs trays fitted before you travel home |
| Internal bleaching | Agent placed inside a root-filled tooth | A single darkened non-vital tooth | Needs a sound root filling and seal |
What does the evidence say?
Peroxide-based gels are the active ingredient in professional whitening; they break down into reactive oxygen species that alter the pigment molecules responsible for colour [4]. Clinical textbooks describe both office and home techniques as effective when cases are properly selected [4].
A frequent question concerns lights and lasers. Laboratory research has shown that the effect of light depends on the specific light source and gel combination, and that some lights raise the temperature of the tooth [1]. Lasers are discussed in the periodontal literature mainly within specific clinical applications [5]. In practice, therefore, we explain that a light is not essential for whitening and that heat is something to avoid.
Whitening toothpastes are another source of confusion. Their abrasives and other agents mainly remove surface stains; they do not change the inherent colour of the tooth [7]. They can help maintain results, but they are not a substitute for bleaching.
Who should not have whitening, or should wait
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women, as a precaution.
- Children and young teenagers.
- People with untreated decay, cracked teeth, exposed roots or active gum disease, which should be treated first. See our gum disease treatment page.
- Patients with many visible front fillings or crowns, who should know these will not lighten and may need replacing afterwards to match [6].
- Anyone with marked tooth sensitivity, until the cause is assessed.
Your whitening appointment, step by step
- Examination: checking for decay, leaking fillings and gum health; recording the starting shade.
- Cleaning: removing plaque, tartar and surface stain so the gel can act evenly.
- Protection: isolating the gums and lips.
- Gel application: in one or more cycles in the chair, or fitting of trays for home use.
- Review: assessing the result, sensitivity and any need for further sessions.
Planning teeth whitening in Istanbul around your stay
Whitening is one of the shorter treatments to plan around a trip. In general, a combined examination, cleaning and in-office session can often be arranged within a few days, while home trays require a scanning or impression appointment and a fitting before you leave. Your exact plan, however, depends on the examination findings; if decay or gum problems are found, these come first.
If you are also considering zirconia crowns or an implant crown in the front of the mouth, whitening should be completed first. Shade selection for crowns is then done once the colour has stabilised, usually after a short waiting period.
Practical points
- Bring any recent dental X-rays and a list of medicines.
- Avoid scheduling whitening on the same day as a long flight if you are prone to sensitivity.
- Plan meals for the first day or two: it helps to limit strongly coloured food and drinks.

Sensitivity, risks and keeping your results
Temporary sensitivity and mild gum irritation are the most common side effects and generally settle within days. Over-use of whitening products, particularly unsupervised high-strength gels, may increase sensitivity and irritate the gums. Results fade gradually; colour changes with diet, smoking and age.
To maintain your shade, keep up regular cleanings, rinse after coffee or tea, avoid smoking, and use home trays for occasional top-ups if your dentist recommends it. Your home dentist can continue this follow-up with the records we provide.
Frequently asked questions
How long does teeth whitening take in Istanbul?
An in-office session usually takes around an hour or more, after an examination and cleaning. Home whitening continues over days to weeks. Your dentist confirms the plan after examining your teeth.
Does whitening damage enamel?
Professionally supervised whitening with appropriate gels is considered safe for enamel when used as directed. Temporary sensitivity is common, which is why supervision and correct concentrations matter.
Will whitening work on my crowns or fillings?
No. Whitening only lightens natural tooth structure. Existing crowns, veneers and tooth-coloured fillings keep their colour and may need replacing to match.
Is a light or laser necessary?
Not necessarily. Research shows the effect of light varies with the light and gel used, and some lights increase tooth temperature. Many effective protocols do not use a light.
How long do whitening results last?
Results gradually fade with time, diet and habits such as smoking. Regular cleaning and occasional supervised top-ups help maintain the shade.
Can a single dark tooth be whitened?
Often yes. A tooth darkened after root canal treatment may be lightened with internal bleaching, after checking that the root filling is sound.
