Porcelain veneers in Istanbul are thin ceramic shells, roughly the thickness of a contact lens, bonded to the front surface of your teeth to improve their colour, shape and size. Compared with crowns, veneers usually require much less tooth reduction, and preparation is ideally kept within the enamel. With careful case selection and healthy gums, veneers can serve for many years.
Porcelain veneers in Istanbul at a glance
- Visits: usually a few – planning, preparation and impressions, try-in and bonding.
- Timeline: typically a few weeks including laboratory work.
- Anaesthesia: local anaesthesia if teeth are prepared; often not needed for no-prep cases.
- Recovery: most people return to normal activities the same day; mild sensitivity may occur.
What are porcelain veneers?
A veneer covers only the visible front surface of a tooth. It is typically 0.3–0.7 mm thick and made of feldspathic porcelain or a glass ceramic such as lithium disilicate. Its strength comes from adhesive bonding: the ceramic and the enamel are both etched, and a resin cement creates a strong bond between them.
That is why we aim to keep preparation within the enamel. Laboratory research has shown that veneer preparations remove considerably less tooth structure than full-crown preparations [1]. This minimally invasive principle is described in detail in the literature on bonded restorations [2].
| Porcelain veneer | Zirconia crown | Composite bonding | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Front surface | Whole tooth | Only where needed |
| Tooth reduction | Usually minimal | More | Little or none |
| Colour stability | High | High | May stain over time |
Heavily filled or root-treated teeth are often better suited to zirconia crowns.
Who are porcelain veneers suitable for?
Veneers are usually considered for healthy front teeth with enough enamel and concerns such as stains that do not respond to whitening, chips, worn edges, small gaps, minor irregularities or teeth that look short. They are often part of a wider smile design plan, where the new tooth shape is tried in your mouth first. If neighbouring teeth will stay natural, teeth whitening is done beforehand, because the shade of porcelain cannot be changed later.
Veneers may not be suitable if you have active gum disease, very little enamel, large fillings, uncontrolled grinding, a significant bite problem or habits such as nail biting. Gum problems should be treated first with gum disease treatment. A definitive diagnosis and treatment plan is made by the dentist after a clinical examination.
Porcelain veneers Istanbul: the treatment steps
- Examination: teeth, gums, bite and signs of grinding are assessed.
- Preparatory care: cleaning, fillings or gum treatment if needed.
- Digital plan and mock-up: the new shape is designed and tried in your mouth.
- Shade selection: chosen in natural light to match neighbouring teeth.
- Preparation: a minimal, guided reduction under local anaesthesia where needed.
- Impressions and temporaries: digital or conventional impressions; temporaries if required.
- Try-in and bonding: fit and shade are checked, then veneers are bonded under isolation.
- Review: bite adjustment, a night guard if you grind, and follow-up visits.
If you are travelling to Istanbul, let us know your dates in advance so laboratory time and try-in visits can be planned realistically.
What the research says
Porcelain veneers in Istanbul and worldwide are supported by long-term data. Layton and Walton reported high survival of feldspathic veneers over follow-up of up to 21 years [3], and Beier and colleagues reported favourable results over up to 20 years [4]. In those studies, failures were mainly fractures, debonding and marginal staining, and Beier et al. found higher risk in patients who grind and in root-treated teeth. A ten-year prospective trial by Peumans et al. highlighted the role of margin quality and bonding [5]. A systematic review and meta-analysis also identified fracture and debonding as the most frequent complications [6].
Risks and aftercare
After porcelain veneers in Istanbul, possible issues include temporary sensitivity, chipping or debonding, marginal staining and gum recession over the years. Prepared teeth will need replacement veneers in future. Brush twice daily with a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, avoid biting ice, nutshells or pens, and wear a night guard if you grind your teeth. Six-monthly check-ups help protect both your gums and your veneers.

Frequently asked questions
Do teeth have to be shaved down for veneers?
In most cases a small, controlled amount of enamel is removed. Some suitable cases can be treated with no-prep veneers. The amount of preparation depends on tooth position and the planned shape.
How long do porcelain veneers last?
No dentist can promise an exact lifespan. Long-term studies have reported veneers functioning for many years. Longevity depends on grinding habits, oral hygiene, your bite and regular check-ups.
Are veneers or crowns better for me?
Veneers cover only the front of the tooth and usually need less reduction. Crowns cover the whole tooth and suit teeth with major structural loss. The choice depends on the condition of each tooth.
Will veneers stain?
Porcelain is very colour-stable compared with composite. However, the margins and your natural teeth can stain over time. Whitening does not change the shade of porcelain.
Can I message the clinic in English before my visit?
