Dental Implants in Istanbul: Suitability, Evidence and Planning

Dental implants Istanbul: who is a candidate, what the evidence says and how to plan visits at our Bahcelievler clinic. Book your examination today.

Last updated:

Dental implants Istanbul patients ask about are small titanium (or ceramic) screws placed in the jawbone to replace the roots of missing teeth; once the bone has bonded to the implant, a crown, bridge or denture is attached on top. At Yayla Dental Akademi in Bahçelievler, every implant plan starts with an examination and three-dimensional imaging.

At a glance

  • What it replaces: a single tooth, several teeth or a full arch.
  • Healing time: bone integration usually takes a few months before the final teeth are fitted, although some cases allow earlier loading.
  • Visits: commonly two treatment stages, with at least one stay in Istanbul for surgery and a later stay for the final restoration.
  • Anaesthesia: routine placement is carried out under local anaesthesia.
  • Key requirement: enough healthy bone and controlled gum disease, which are confirmed only after examination and imaging.

Is an implant the right choice? Five decision criteria

Before discussing techniques, it helps to ask whether an implant suits your situation at all.

1. Is there enough bone, and where are the nerves and sinuses?

Bone height, width and quality determine whether grafting is needed first. Professional guidance therefore recommends cross-sectional imaging, usually cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), when planning implants [9].

2. Are your gums healthy?

Active periodontitis should be treated before surgery. Long-term research has linked a history of periodontitis, as well as the absence of supportive periodontal care, with lower implant survival [7]. Our gum disease treatment page explains what comes first.

3. Do you smoke?

Smoking has been associated with higher implant failure rates in clinical studies [5][7]. We will discuss stopping or reducing smoking around surgery.

4. Is your general health stable?

Well-controlled diabetes does not automatically rule out implants. In a pilot study, patients with type 2 diabetes across a range of glycaemic control showed successful early healing [6]; poorly controlled diabetes, however, calls for caution.

5. Would a bridge or denture serve you equally well?

An implant avoids drilling neighbouring teeth. Yet where adjacent teeth already need crowns, a bridge with zirconia crowns may be reasonable.

Who should postpone or reconsider implants?

  • Children and teenagers whose jaws are still growing.
  • People with uncontrolled diabetes or other unstable systemic conditions.
  • Patients after head and neck radiotherapy or on certain bone-modifying medicines, until their physician and dentist agree.
  • Anyone with untreated gum disease or extensive tooth decay.

What the evidence says about dental implants

Implant dentistry rests on osseointegration: a direct structural connection between living bone and the implant surface. This was described in Brånemark's long-term work on edentulous jaws [1] and refined by Albrektsson and colleagues, who outlined the requirements for a lasting bone-to-implant anchorage, such as a biocompatible material, careful surgical technique and appropriate loading [2].

Follow-up studies over 15 years and longer reported high survival rates for implants supporting full-arch restorations [3]. Furthermore, Albrektsson and co-workers proposed success criteria that go beyond simple survival, including the absence of persistent pain, infection or mobility and limited bone loss over time [4].

Immediate loading, where a temporary tooth is attached shortly after surgery, is possible in selected cases. A systematic review reported survival rates for immediately loaded implants that were comparable to conventional loading when patients were carefully selected [8]. However, stability, bone quality and bite forces must all be favourable.

The soft tissue around an implant also matters. Textbook reviews emphasise that a stable seal of gum around the implant protects the underlying bone [10].

How treatment usually unfolds

  1. Consultation and imaging: clinical examination, review of your records and CBCT where indicated.
  2. Preparatory treatment: extractions, gum therapy or bone grafting, if needed.
  3. Implant placement: a short procedure under local anaesthesia, following established surgical principles [11].
  4. Healing phase: typically a few months while osseointegration takes place; a temporary tooth may be provided.
  5. Restoration: impressions or digital scans, then fitting of the final crown, bridge or overdenture.
  6. Maintenance: regular check-ups and professional cleaning around the implant.

Planning dental implants in Istanbul

Implant treatment rarely fits into a single short trip. In general terms, many patients plan one stay for examination and surgery and a second stay, after the healing period, for the final teeth. Stay length varies with the number of implants and any grafting; your exact schedule is set only after examination and imaging.

What to bring

  • Recent panoramic X-rays or CBCT scans, preferably as digital files.
  • A list of current medicines and any allergies.

Getting to the clinic

Our clinic is in Bahçelievler, on Istanbul's European side, close to Bakırköy and Yenibosna. Arriving at Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side, you can reach us by taxi, airport shuttle or public transport. Journey times depend heavily on traffic, so we suggest leaving a generous buffer before your first appointment.

Communication and follow-up at home

You can write to us in English via WhatsApp before your visit, and we can share your notes and images with your local dentist. After you return home, we recommend regular check-ups and professional dental cleaning around the implants.

Risks, side effects and long-term care

Swelling, bruising and mild discomfort for a few days are common after surgery. Less common complications include infection, nerve irritation, sinus involvement in the upper jaw and failure of the implant to integrate. Later, inflammation around the implant (peri-implantitis) can cause bone loss if plaque is not controlled.

Therefore, daily cleaning with interdental brushes, avoiding smoking and attending maintenance visits are essential. If you plan teeth whitening, complete it before the crown shade is chosen.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I need to stay in Istanbul for dental implants?

Many patients make one trip for surgery and a second trip a few months later for the final teeth. Your dentist will give you a personalised schedule after examination and imaging.

Is implant surgery done under general anaesthesia?

Routine implant placement is performed under local anaesthesia, so the area is numb while you remain awake.

Can I get a fixed tooth on the same day?

Immediate loading is possible in selected cases with good bone and stability.

Can I have implants if I smoke or have diabetes?

Smoking and poorly controlled diabetes are associated with higher failure risk. Many people with well-controlled diabetes are suitable candidates, and reducing or stopping smoking improves the outlook.

Do I need to bring my X-rays?

Yes, please bring any recent X-rays or CBCT scans and a medication list. New images may still be needed.

Who will look after my implants when I go home?

We provide your treatment records so that your local dentist can carry out regular check-ups and cleaning.
