Both zirconia crowns and porcelain veneers (also called laminate veneers) are used to improve the appearance of teeth, but they are different restorations for different situations.
The key difference
| Zirconia crown | Porcelain veneer | |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Covers the whole tooth | Covers only the front surface |
| Tooth preparation | More tooth structure is removed | Usually minimal preparation of the enamel |
| Typical use | Heavily filled, broken or root-treated teeth; implant crowns | Healthy teeth with shape, colour or small spacing issues |
| Strength | Very strong, suitable for back teeth | Strong once bonded, mainly for front teeth |
Which one is right for me?
If a tooth is structurally weak, a crown protects it. If the tooth is healthy and the goal is mainly aesthetic, a veneer is often the more conservative choice because it preserves more natural tooth. Sometimes neither is needed, and teeth whitening is enough.
What both need
Healthy gums, precise margins and good daily cleaning are essential for any restoration to last. Grinding habits should be managed with a night guard.
