Digital smile design is a planning method in aesthetic dentistry. Using photographs, video and intraoral scans, the dentist designs the shape, length and proportions of the teeth on a computer before any treatment begins, so that the patient can see and discuss the planned result in advance.
How does it work?
- Records: facial and smile photos, short videos and a digital scan of the teeth.
- Analysis: facial midline, lip line, tooth proportions and gum levels are evaluated.
- Design: a proposed smile is created digitally and discussed with you.
- Mock-up: in many cases a temporary trial version can be tried in the mouth.
- Treatment: the approved plan guides whitening, crowns, veneers, gum contouring or orthodontics.
Who is it for?
It is useful for anyone planning aesthetic treatment of the front teeth, for example uneven tooth shapes, gaps, worn or discoloured teeth, or a "gummy" smile. It does not replace treatment of decay or gum disease, which always come first.
Benefits and limits
A digital design improves communication and helps set realistic expectations. However, the final result also depends on the biology of the teeth and gums, so the plan is adjusted to what is healthy and achievable.
Related treatments: teeth whitening and zirconia crowns.
