What Is Dental Implant Treatment and Who Is It For?

What a dental implant is, who is a suitable candidate, how treatment works and how long it takes. A guide from our Bahcelievler, Istanbul clinic.

· Last updated:

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root, usually made of titanium, that is placed in the jawbone to replace a missing tooth. Once the bone has bonded to its surface, a process called osseointegration, the implant supports a crown, bridge or denture that looks and functions much like a natural tooth.

Who is a good candidate?

Implants can be considered for adults who have lost one, several or all of their teeth, provided that:

  • the jaw has finished growing;
  • there is enough bone, or bone can be rebuilt with grafting;
  • gum disease is treated and under control;
  • general health conditions such as diabetes are well managed.

Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and untreated periodontitis are linked to a higher risk of implant problems, so they are discussed openly before treatment.

How does treatment work?

  1. Examination and imaging: a clinical check and, where indicated, a 3D cone beam CT scan.
  2. Preparation: gum treatment, extractions or bone grafting if needed.
  3. Implant placement: usually under local anaesthesia.
  4. Healing: typically a few months while the bone integrates with the implant.
  5. Final restoration: the crown or bridge is fitted on the implant.

How long do implants last?

Long-term studies report high survival rates, but no treatment can be guaranteed for life. Daily cleaning around the implant, avoiding smoking and regular check-ups make the biggest difference.
